About me

Hello, my name is Gerardo Di Pietro. Allow me to take you on a journey myself. I was born in Canada into an Italian-speaking hearing family. With my parents and my sister, we used for visual and gestural communication with some home-based signs. I also have one Deaf brother and we communicated everything in our own sign system. My true evolution as a signer was at Gallaudet University, where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education.
In 2006, while backpacking in Peru and interacting with the local signers, I noticed different dialects and languages. This sparked my passion for signed languages. It also started a lifelong journey of teaching sign language, storytelling to children, and working professionally as a consultant to help people better understand language and culture.
Currently, I teach ASL classes at Berkeley City College, and Skyline College. I truly believe in making sign language come alive for my students. This helps them embrace the language and become engaged learners. As language and culture always evolve, I am staying ahead of the curve by pursuing my Master of Arts in Sign Language Education at Gallaudet University.

Latest Updates (Written)
My achievement in Sign Language Education in 2016 would not have been possible without the exceptional support and instruction I received from Skyline College (2014-2019), Ohlone College (2017-2019), Cal State University, East Bay (2018-2019), and Berkeley City College (2013-present).
I became an exemplary educator who provides California state of the art instruction to deaf and hard of hearing children. I developed and applied foundational knowledge and theories of educational thought including balanced bilinguals in American Sign Language (ASL) and English with positive Deaf identities. I accomplished Master Degree in Education balanced bilinguals in American Sign Language (ASL) and English with positive Deaf identities at Western Oregon University.
Witnessing the joy of signing stories is what fuels my work as an ASL Literature teacher at California School for the Deaf, Fremont. Since 2019, I've guided 5th graders through narratives and launched "Eagle News," a platform showcasing their published signing videos. I take pride in crafting engaging online learning materials and actively seeking best practices to empower Deaf and Hard of Hearing students to thrive. (https://www.csdeagles.com/)
Currently, I'm pursuing the English Learner Added Authorization (CLAD) through California Teachers of English Learners CTEL at UC San Diego Extended Studies.
